Think about things for a moment from your dog’s prospective. You’re a new puppy in a household. You have never met another dog, cat or screaming kids. You have no idea what a car is or what danger is. You have not met new people or maybe even stepped on grass. You have been with your mom from the time you opened your eyes and have had truly limited real world experiences. Now look at a rescue dog. He may have come from a horrendous situation with mean people, starving, dumped, taken from a kind gentle environment and thrown on the street to fend for himself. You have had to defend, scrounge for food and water and have had no positive influence for a period of time. You were then caught, possibly by a catch pole, placed in a cell for 11 days and suddenly you are supposed to be a sweet gentle house dog with your new owners.

This past week was a difficult one emotionally for me and for the rescue. There were two incidents that taught me and the parties involved harsh lessons in reality and both need to be memorialized here so that others do not fall into this emotional abyss.

It is amazing that now after 8+ years of running my rescue I have adopted out 761 German Shepherds to 761 families, and although a few have been returned, my track record is good in placing the right dog in the right home. IT’S NOT LUCK, BUT IT IS AT TIMES DESTINY. Many of my friends and rescue partners ask me repeatedly who fits what dog? How do I choose which dogs to show to which families? And of course the main question is not for me to answer but for the potential adopter to address, that is, which is the right dog for my family, notwithstanding breed and gender?
