JUDE HAS A NEW FAMILY JUDE came to us today 2/6/16 from the shelter in Tallahassee FL. He was originally picked up as a street stray and was sent there only to be placed on the euth list for yesterday. The family that found him originally decided to pull him and bring him to us. They truly cared for this handsome big boy and wanted him to get into a good home situation.
Jude is a large tan GSD. he could have something else in him but from what we have seen he is a GSD but pretty much all tan. We have had two or three of these in the past 760+ dogs so they are out there and as we have always contended cosmetics is the last point of evaluation. If a dog has what it takes then his appearance, like ours as humans, comes in last when it comes to his suitability as a family member.
Jude is a light positive for heart worm and we will treat him in the coming weeks for that problem. Treatment may be done with either of 2 methods but regardless of the technique he will get the treatment he needs to survive.
Jude also needs a considerable amount of training. He is super people friendly but has some dog to dog issues. His dog to dog problems are not what I would term severe but totally curable with training. He is not at all aggressive when it comes to other dog in the sense he wants to attack, but rather he seems to be protecting himself because we don't know how long he was out on the streets fending for himself. I handled him this afternoon and with a correction he will come around in a week or so of training. We intend to place him with a foster who is in tune with these behaviors and will address them over the next 7-10 days. Once he is calmed down we will get him into group training for socialization at which time he will learn the basic skills. He was probably a hose dog but we are not certain about his being housebroken. He definitely wants to pee and poop outside and since he is crate trained, will not go in his enclosure. We will learn more in the days that follow.
He does like people and car rides. He is social and mentally engaged and is ready for training. He is NOT a red zone dog and therefore can go into classes immediately. He does seem to come to you when called but at this juncture it is more for food and reassurance than knowing his name. He was called "Dude" by the person that found him, but I CHANGED THAT TO JUDE.
Jude weighs about 85 pounds and he is a tall male neutered brown GSD. He has a large and powerful body and needs a prong or pinch collar in order to keep him under control. He will walk with you very well on a leash until he sees another dog. He is great with seeing and being petted by people. At this juncture i would suggest a single dog household, no cats or critters and a master who is strong and alpha enough to physically handle him. He is chipped and has all shots and currently resides at our N Ft Myers Kennel.
