SWEET PIPER HAS A NEW FAMILY
UPDATE: WE HAVE A FAMILY COMING TO SEE HER TOMORROW 9/23/15
PIPER was the worst case of cruelty to a dog we have had in years. Through it all Piper is a sweet girl, eager for attention and super loving. Piper was initially re-homed by us to a fantastic family. They nursed her back to health and got her to through these very difficult times physically. What they did discover was that Piper had a few latent issues that did show up after she regained her health. These conditions although trainable were separation anxiety, and she was destructive when left to her own devices. She was not crated at the time, She is an easy dog to train but has had no real formal training. She does come when called and knows her name but that's about it in the training category. Yesterday I spent a few hours with her as did our trainer John Blayney. we both assess this dog as a tremendous potential and a great pet however the new adopters must understand that she does have a few hangups which need immediate attention. She also has a high prey drive which is great for some dogs and some homes and not as good for others. She would be a great dog if trained appropriately based on her drive.
Piper is a 1.5 year old black female GSD. She is HW positive and will be treated by us at our expense in September so no worries there. She has already begun her protocol for the shots and already has a vet appointment for them. Piper is about 60 pounds and is still growing. She will be about 65 pounds when she reached maturity. She is being housed at our N Ft Myers kennel.
Back to her history...He first owners put a collar on her and never removed it. It grew into her neck and caused a 15 inch gash in her next which has since been repaired. She still had an open wound when we got her and is being treated for it but is has not slowed her down at all. She does not seem to be in any pain and she does everything any dog would do without any signs of discomfort. We hope her previous owners rot in hell for their cruelty and that more of these SOB'S are arrested and prosecuted. The world would be far better off without them.
Piper has had all shots and has been spayed. She has been in the shelter and hospital for the last few days back in August 2015, and spent much of her recuperation from surgery at a foster home. At that home it was determined she was nippy with their 4-5 year old children. WE SAW NOTHING THAT WOULD INDICATE ANY PROBLEMS THERE BUT WE DO WANT THAT TO BE MONITORED. UPDATE She is a normal GSD puppy and the mouthing is all but gone. IT IS BEST TO HAVE HER WITH KIDS OVER THE AGE OF 10 AND AS A SINGLE DOG UNTIL WE FIND OUT DIFFERENTLY. When she was there however, the kids reportedly tormented her and since she had a tremendously painful surgery was unable to tolerate their hanging on her causing her pain. This is a sweet dog who just wants to be loved but needs understanding about her issues and TRAINING!!!. She bonded with me in an hour and curled up at my feet for love in just a few minutes time. She takes treats softy and is in general a soft dog. She is a bit jumpy but that is easily addressed. She seems to have great hips and runs and jumps well. Piper is currently in our kennel and we welcome everyone to see her. She is great with other dogs and very social with all people. She remains untested with cats but she is not a pray driven dog and accepts other animal well.
UPDATE: I SPENT AN HOUR OR SO WITH HER YESTERDAY 9/21 AND THIS IS WHAT I SAW: She comes out of her kennel like a rocket and once outside was calm and inquisitive. She needs leash training but is easy once corrected and walks well. She is a runner and given the chance she would tare around the back yard in joy but never run away. She comes when she is called and plays very well with other dogs. She was in a foster for a while and there she did chew things and needs to be crated until she knows the rules on what are toys and what are possessions of the owner. She is very sweet and gentle and can make a fabulous pet once trained. SHE NEEDS TO BE IN A FOSTER ASAP BECAUSE SHE WILL BE GETTING HER HEART WORM TREATMENT IN 2 WEEKS AND HAS TO BE KEPT QUIET. THESE LAST 5 PICTURES ARE OF HER TODAY, ALL HEALED AND LOOKING VERY WELL. PLEASE FIND IT IN YOUR HEART TO TAKE A CHANCE ON PIPER YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY.
