CHIEF NEEDS A NEW HOME AND FAMILY
Update: I had Chief out for 6 hours today (Sunday 4/19). He went to Petsmart and did fantastic, then he spent 2 hours with people, dogs and kids at Fisherman's village in Punta Gorda and he also met 2 families. He was perfect except for not liking a puppy he met. He is sweet affectionate dog in need of a family, preferably a one dog household. I like this boy.
IF THERE IS A FAMILY OUT THERE LOOKING FOR AN ACTIVE, LOVING DOG... PLEASE CONSIDER CHIEF. HE IS A GREAT DOG.
Chief originally came out of a loving home with 2 caring people and a 7 year old female. The original owners work long hours and they have not had the time to train him nor play with him the way they feel they should. Chief was crated a great deal as a puppy and developed some separation anxiety issues which remain imprinted with him today.
Chief was then re-homed to a young family with a 2 year old child. He has been there for a month. He loves the baby and the baby loves him. He learned to deal with the child and has been terrific with him. He was a lousy eater at first but after a few weeks got comfortable and began to thrive. The issue they had was again his separation anxiety needs to be with the owner 24/7. He is a perfect gentlemen when he is with people but when returned to his crate he barks and wants to come out to be with you.
Chief is an engaged young male, black and tan GSD. He is just 1.3 year old, heart worm negative and he has all shots and is chipped. He is a one family dog who needs training and socialization immediately. As stated he was in a home but he required just too much attention which the family couldn't provide. He is smart, clever, attentive and highly trainable.
Chief is in need everything from basic obedience training and socialization immediately and can be enrolled in our school by the Sunday after you get him. . He NEEDS someone who is going to be his alpha, hence everyone in the home needs to be his master. We didn't initially recommend him to go to a household with small kids because he does jump and is quite strong but after this 1 month experience with a small child, we would be OK with that; just so long as the family has the time to get him under control and train him.
He loves his walks and heals well, listens well and is engaged. He doesn't like the crate but tolerates it. We understand he did need to be crated when driving, but here again we found that to be unnecessary. He has learned to accept direction and has responded well to a kind hand and training. He is treat motivated. He is house broken and at (his original home) not all destructive. He is one of those dogs who cannot have any beds or chew toys in his crate as he destroys them. When a dog is bored he chews.... word to the wise, don't give him things he can destroy in his crate. We recommend he be tethered around the house to you until he has had sufficient training to be responsible around the home alone. This can take 6 months to be certain and we recommend when you leave, even after that time to crate him. He is crate trained but doesn't like it much. He is not well leash trained unless on a pinch collar, but has improved radically in the week he was in foster and the month at his first home. He does pull on a regular collar, so here too, training can correct his issues. On the pinch collar he is just great. He was somewhat inattentive when we worked with him on the first Sunday we had him but that's because he has not been correctly socialized nor trained appropriately. Now that we have worked him for 8 weeks time (two of which was while he was in foster) he is becoming a great dog with tremendous potential. He will require a strong leader who will not take nonsense from him and get him ramped up as quickly as possible. Chief will be in our kennel and he is available immediately. Chief would be OK with other dogs and I believe that wold be the best thing for him as that would give him the activity he so desperately needs. He is a people friendly dog who just wants to be loved. Any 1 year old is and can be ditzy but he is calm and will learn fast once he has begun a quality training class with an alpha leader. If Chief looks like a dog that can fit into your family, please call us at 941 575 0243. PLEASE GIVE THIS GREAT BOY A HOME. More recent pictures very soon.
Here's what the current owner had to say about him:
•He is great with our 17 month son.
•He is okay with our cat but tries playing with her any chance, though the cat does not want to play.
•He guards his food but only when the cat walks by otherwise he allows us to take his food or feed him by hand..
•He has severe separation anxiety. You cannot leave him in his crate and leave the room without him barking like crazy.
•He Let's you know when he needs to go out and he is house trained.
•He has started his heartguard medication. He got his first shot 2 weeks ago. He will need the second one in 6 months.
•He is on the flea prevention tablet. One every month. So in 2 weeks he will need the 2nd tablet. I only purchased 3 months worth. So he will only have 1 more left after he has his 2nd tablet.
•He has been bathed at home and at petsmart so he is well taken care of and he is brushed every other day.
•He eats 2 times a day. Simply Nourish is the brand I feed him. From petsmart. •He seems to like it but needs wet food mixed in with it. Will not eat just dry food unless you hand feed him.
•Chief just requires more attention and training than we can give him. He needs someone with him a lot of the time and with us working full time he doesn't get out of that crate as often as he should.
•we do take him on walks around our neighborhood daily and he is good walking/running on leash and with everyone he meets.
•He has a lot of energy so I would not trust him off leash at anytime unless he is in his crate. With training he would be fine but since he jumps and we have a small child, Chief needs to stay on a lead until his training is done.
•He is very destructive in his crate when he is bored. I've gone through 2 expensive quality beds within 3 weeks. And 2 leather leashes. He loves chewing. He has a big nyla bone And Kong toys with cookies inside. But that's not enough to distract him from tearing other things up. We have not take the time to provide him the training or behavior modification he needs to correct these bad habits.
I Hope he can find a great family to give him what he needs. He is such a love And loves being hugged and given kisses.
OUR OBSERVATION : Chief needs training and the family that gets him must understand that he has bad habits that are totally correctable. These issue are all training issues and none are bad personality traits. he has been ignore for his life and wants and needs attention. If you spend the time training him these issues will disappear and you will have the dog you want, but without a firm dedication to the time he needs he will be coming back to us again. FOR ANY FAMILY CONSIDERING HIM, THIS IS A GOOD DOG. HE CAN BE FIXED WITH TIME AND TRAINING. HE IS A LOVING DOG WHO JUST GOT A BAD START BECAUSE OF HIS ORIGINAL OWNERS AND CAN BE FIXED. THE CURRENT OWNERS DID TRY THEIR BEST BUT ALSO DIN'T HAVE THE BAND WIDTH TO EXECUTE THE TRAINING NEEDED.
