HANDSOME AXEL NOW HAS A SPECIAL HOME AND OWNER
Updated 8-24-13
We are happy to report that Axel has gone to his new home.

I first saw this handsome dog today at the park. he was brought to us by none other than Jeanette of Pit bull Rescue. She has been extremely active in helping many GSD's find new homes and we are truly grateful for her efforts. Jeanette has been training Axel now for about 7 weeks. He is an un-neutered stellar looking black/red and tan male GSD weighing in at about 80 pounds.
He is otherwise healthy, HW Neg and he was fixed last week along with a chip and all shots. He was picked up as a street stray and was probably living on the street for some time. He came in dog reactive, skittish but has since calmed down considerably. He still is small dog and cat reactive but 100% great with people and any larger dog. The distinction is that he is overly concerned when around other small dogs and cats. Not ready to attack, but poised to see what comes next which in our minds is an issue so we recommend he not be placed with small dogs and cats in any household. Jeanette has been desensitizing him to this behavior through clicker training and food rewards for being calm. He was not in the presence of any other dogs today when I evaluated him initially and appeared to be poised, confident and level headed. Since that time i have re-evaluated him and he is just 180 from what we saw initially. He is geting excellent training and he is 100% responsive and confident. he seeks out attention, plays with toy, loves praise and treats and an occasional egg McMuffin. He likes people and is not fearful at all. I was able to immediately approach him, pet him and play with him without incident. We had him meet multiple people today and he was just fantastic. From what I have learned he takes 5 minutes to give a person his belly, which is a sign of submission and acceptance of dominance. We have not evaluated with with other dogs since we already know his patterns. I decided to test him on my own without distractions to see what his personality is with a person not known to him. He was completely manageable and accepting. He had little to no training 8 weeks ago but is now tremendous and well trained in most basic skills.
He is a great dog that is a blank slate from he prospective of training and one who will learn quickly, be responsive to positive reinforced training and one who will be life long friend and companion once the training is done.
We think Axel is about 3-4 years old, no more and possible younger based on his teeth and stature. He is a powerful dog that at this time should be homed without any other pets and with a HANDLER AND FAMILY FAMILIAR WITH HANDING A LARGE BREED DOG OR GSD. He should be homed without kids, not because he would not be good with them, but if he did go to a home with kids, they would have to be older and knowledgeable in dog training and maintain the alpha relationship with him. We suggest a family that has the time to work with him and not a family that would leave him for over 5 hours during the day. He is a basically calm dog without other dog distractions but the adopter needs to be aware of his potential for reactivity to other pets. He probably will not be the dog you take to the dog park right away or the dog beach. He has learned manners, leash control and he has become a responsive handsome dog.
